About

The Full Story

Oh hello there website-going ladels and gentlefolk! Thanks for checking out the page.

My name is Ellie, and I run and curate the Instagram account @women_of_archaeology. I'm a post-graduate student at Exeter University, having completed my undergraduate in Archaeology at UCL, London in 2021.

I started the page in the February of 2020 during my undergrad as a spur of moment idea to help combat at the systemic lack of representation that I was seeing in the discipline.

From the one page spread in a textbook to sum up the entirety of the non cis-male contribution to archaeological history, to the lack of women and people of colour that I was seeing in the interpretations of materials: I thought - why not do a small tiny thing to help change that?

This page was my way of wanting to help highlight the incredible humans that I knew were out there, and hopefully create a lovely little community that could inspire and support each other.

Some of the people I have met through the page have left such an impression on me I thought it would be a little selfish to not allow as many people as possible to e-meet them too, so I decided to write down their words of wisdom - check out the Pearls of Wisdom section!

I also started a shop called ArchaeoStudio which sells a range of archy friendly shiny things, and donates 5% of the profits from each sale to the Indian Residential School Survivors Society.

This is a trans inclusive, Black Lives Matter supporting, LGBTQ+ positive, Indigenous sovereignty supporting and intersectional feminist space. Although the name says 'women', this is also a space for our enbys and queer identifying peeps to come on into.

Whether you're just interested, have done a day or fieldwork, or have a hundred post-docs and are internationally renowned; absolutely everyone is welcome.

Thank you for checking it out!

Have something to say - a story to tell? Get in touch! I'd love to hear from you.
